In whatever medium I’m working I’ve always asked myself: How does an object occupy space? This question speaks in part to the formal relationships contained within the object (surface/depth, inside/outside, positive/negative space, differences in texture and color and light); but more importantly, refers to the space around an object and the push-pull relationships that bind an object to its surroundings. In my most recent body of work I’ve looked to the things in my own immediate environment – the walls, windows, tools, materiel and waste that makes up my design/sculpture practice – to attempt to discover how these very concrete things exert an influence on my work.
